Chapter Thirteen

Tuesday, Lili didn’t feel much better than Sunday or Monday. She and Shayleen sat in their favorite buffet restaurant by the front window. The crowd passing on the sidewalk outside increased the closer it got to noon.

A major case of loneliness had taken over her heart. She’d left Cade behind and a piece of her heart with him. Now she couldn’t eat, sleep, or stop thinking of him.

“Oh, honey,” Shayleen said. “I’m sure things will be fine.”

Lili glanced at her radiant cousin and smiled. “At least some good came out of this. You and Brandon still got married, and Aunt Patty knows about the baby.”

“Don’t remind me of that episode. When we couldn’t find you, I was so worried, I got sick to my stomach.” She grabbed Lili’s hand and squeezed. “It was just nerves. It wasn’t your fault that Cade held you captive.

“Anyway, Brandon was paranoid and told me that he’d bring in a doctor to put me on bedrest if the stress put the baby at risk.”

Shay rolled her eyes. “So, you know, Aunt Patty heard, and ay, dios mio. She was all crazy about how she wasn’t going to let the first grandchild come into the world to unwed parents. So the minister married us, and that calmed her down.”

Lili grinned. “Thank goodness. Just imagine if you guys would’ve tried to postpone.”

Shay groaned and leaned back in the chair, her arms over her chest. “Girl, if we would’ve mentioned postponing, she would have had real, live kittens.”

Lili giggled and sipped her water.

“Enough about me, Lili. Tell me why you’re so sad. I don’t like seeing you this way.”

“I think I’m getting the flu. I’ve been feeling kind of sick lately. Very feverish.”

“Lili! That’s not what I’m talking about.” Shayleen leaned over the table toward her. “What happened between you and Cade?”

Lili shushed her, looking around to see if any other patron were paying attention. “Why didn’t you tell me Brandon was part of a wolf group?”

“It’s called a pack,” Shayleen answered. “Well, prima, because you’re not supposed to really know in the first place. But with Brandon, I couldn’t help but tell you.”

“Are you telling me no one in the family but me knows what he is?”

Shayleen chewed on her lip then nodded. “Yup, you’re it.”

She dropped her face into her hand. “Thank god I never said anything to anyone. You’ve got to tell your mom.”

Shayleen swirled her straw in her cup. “I was going to, after the wedding and before the baby. I swear. Now, tell me what happened with Cade.”

“Nothing. A whole lot of nothing,” she growled.

“Nothin’ never put that kind of face on you before, prima.”
